France’s relationship with Africa is changing rapidly. For decades, France maintained deep economic, political, military and monetary ties with many African countries. But today, countries across Francophone Africa are demanding greater sovereignty, control over their natural resources and freedom from old systems of dependency. From Niger’s uranium to Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal, France’s traditional influence in Africa is facing serious challenges. At the same time, protests in France over the cost of living, government spending, public services and economic pressures are raising important questions about the future of the French economy.Could Africa’s changing relationship with France be contributing to the pressure Paris is experiencing? What would happen if more African countries abandoned the CFA franc? And could the end of France’s traditional influence in Africa mark the beginning of a completely new relationship between Africa and Europe?
